At the annual On-line family get together at 2003 HDSA Convention in Houston several of the young adults from the NYA had an impromptu jam session when Jordan started playing a hot guitar. That is when we realized; WOW, these kids and young adults are pretty talented! The idea of an NYA talent show was born that night. Working together with the NYA members that weekend, we approached HDSA about allotting time for a NYA talent show at the 2004 convention in St. Louis. A little hesitant at first, but always supporting NYA activities, the HDSA agreed to provide the NYA 30 minutes at the Friday night reception.
When the 2004 convention date was drawing close, everyone was getting a little worried because only a few NYA members had actually signed up for the first annual NYA Talent Show. NYA Adult Advisors, along with Bill Marsh at HDSA, were biting our nails wondering 'was this idea a mistake?'
But, as we should have known from past years, when these kids and young adults get together at the convention each year, they can do ANYTHING they set their minds too! After their first talent show most people responded with:
WOW..........it took your breath away to see these young people with so much talent get up in front of everyone and perform!! What voices! What musicians!! What actors!! What artists/sculptures!! What poets!! What SPECIAL kids we have!!
They were such a BIG HIT that the NYA Talent Show become an annual event at the HDSA's national conventions! In the past acts have been anything from dance & fitness routines, drama/monologs, art show, musicians and singers and poetry readers. Each and every NYA member is asked to get involved in some way, either as a performer or with other assigned "jobs" during the evening.
The money raised by the NYA during their Talent show goes to HDSA Research and the NYA Convention Scholarship Fund. In 2008 the convention scholarship fund awarded TWENTY FIVE full scholarships to young people from HD families from 13 different states!
The 2008 NYA Talent Show needs your support. If you are a young person who will be attending the HDSA NYA Day and the HDSA convention in Pittsburgh, please contact Scott Nicholas via email, hilikus_2005@yahoo.com, and let him know how YOU can help this years NYA Talent Show!
