zoloft impact on hd

1.)i was reading on hdac.org the main website and now i can't seem to find the  exact place i read it; however; it was on research showing that sertaline promotes phenotype neurogenesis and boosts BDNF levels making the degeneration and memory loss slower - so - prolonging the memory and cognative impact of HD.

So, this was one great thing....think about it; zoloft also helps with the anxiety and depression symptoms present in HD patients too. so -

2.)then: Mediterranian diets help folks live longer with alzheimers, and HD.  Olive Oil, vegies, friuts, nuts, low dairy, low meat, and good grains. that's the typical - healthy diet in my opinion. - and it is totally a 2 cent opinion. so that can help prolong life....

3.) fried foods seem to create a toxic chemical compound - so it's important to limit the "crappola".

These were the items of late that I got from HDAC.org yesterday.

If Zoloft is helping anyone, I feel that is great. Shaun is on a rather large dosage- the pharmacist called the doctor just to make sure he was reading it correctly. We had tried the St. John's Wort, but, the amounts needed for 'balance' were not financially doable. Now, it seems that my husband is more or less just addicted to the 'script as the depression and anxiety haven't really lessened- we have another appt. in 3 weeks...hopefully we can experiement with another drug

I have been on Zoloft forever, before the gene positive diagnosis.... I hate it. I love it.

I was on it from 2000-2006ish and tried to stop which ended in a weekend of hell.

Lately, with more problems in life (2008 diagnosed, late 2008 my HD + dad went into a nursing home. My father in law was put on hospice Jan 1 2009 and told he had days, and is still here.) it seems if I miss one dose... I am reeling for days. It's like when I was on birth control. Missing one or two pills made my period start. Then getting back on track took days. Same thing. I am on 100mg of Zoloft.

I am as depressed and moody as ever-- but would I be worse without it???

I thought this was kindof weird, but it also contradicts what you said about the diet.  My doctor said that the more you weigh is better with HD because it has some sort of "protection" and prolongs the symptoms from coming on.  He strictly told me not to go on any diets...I would think it would be the other way around, like you said, Tiffany.

It is hard to believe that a healthy diet like Tiffany is talking about would not be best for ANYBODY, HD or not.  I know some people have to pile on the carbs and calories to keeep the weight up, though.

I take ensure to make sure I gain weight. I was 145 healthy, all muscle. I went down too a 100lbs in a year. Now I am 111, alot healthier. I don't look like I am going to die. I am on a diet, I had to lose weight for my wedding. Trevor has high blood pressure. We eat super healthy. On that ensure twice a week, I do not lose more weight. I stay the same. Check out my pictures on  my profile. The one with Lucky and me looking really skiny, was me before ensure. There is a healthier me there in the brown shirt. That was three months of ensurse.

Yes, the UT southwest dr. whose seen hundreds and this is his thing - said yes the better you systems are the slower the onset can be - but - eating the blueberries, and good diets and lots of exercise keeps the body in Fighting condition to fight EVERYTHING - every disease or illness - thereis NO health benefit to being over weight - it strains the heart overworks the heart and weakens the body against illness and disease. heart disease, diabetese, etc. all increased by being over weight. so - i'm sorry but that dr. is well intentioned but not exactly using the best method of proactive living. But to each his own - i just know the above is true.

There is lots of evidence to show that Zoloft (Sertraline in the UK) improves neuroplasticity in the brain, resulting in a theoretical slowdown of degradation. Lots to read on Google - but no official trials (at least HD-specific ones) as far as I am aware. :)

Ah... Also meant to say: I'm currently on 150mg of Sertraline a day, which would seem to be the optimal level. However, you need to work up to that from 50mg/day over a period of a couple of months - and under no circumstances should you ever go cold turkey on the stuff, or you'll end up with hallucinations and all sorts of other nasties!
